Congratulations to Solange Knowles on marrying Video Director Alan Ferguson over the weekend. We wish her and her husband a healthy blissful marriage.
Solange mentioned that this marriage is “a labor of love.” With this marriage being Solange second marriage, I hope she has entered this marriage with an open mind, more mature and really ready to put in the work needed to have a healthy happy wedding.
Marriage is a labor of love that we must undertake daily. In my 16 years of marriage, one thing that I have learned “everyday is different.” Marriage is not for the selfish and its not for everyone’s opinion and input. Solange must set boundaries when it comes to what she shares with friends, family and the media.
5 Secrets to a blissful marriage
- Perfection isn’t the key: In marriage, you cannot expect perfection everyday. Your spouse is human. You are human. There will be mistakes made and you must learn from the mistakes not use the mistakes as a punishment to your spouse.
- Keep God First: This is so important. If you operate under the right order: God, husband, wife, children then everyone else many of the hiccups and problems will be diminished. Keep God first and foremost and allow him to be the guiding force in your marriage.
- Effective communication: Learn your spouse love language. Its important that you guys communicate in a way that the other is able to understand and receive it.
- Date your spouse: It is important that you keep the connection alive. Just as you dated before marriage, keep it going. Dating your spouse is not about the place or the money spent but more about connecting, bonding, and communicating. Make it a priority to date your spouse often.
- Set boundaries: It is important to start your marriage off on the right foot with friends, family and with each other. Discuss with your spouse how you will handle the extended family affairs and just what will be shared.
Bonus tip: Laugh often. Don’t get so comfortable with your spouse that you forget to enjoy your spouse. It is so important to be attentive and laugh often with your spouse.
Solange and any newlywed can have their fairytale marriage as long as they understand the work that it will take to get it and it can be had. Marriage is a beautiful opportunity with unlimited blessings. Go get your blessings!

Happy, successful, long term marriages are possible, they just take work. The problem is that so many people work to make the wedding but do no work to make the marriage.
