This week we have the pleasure of talking with a couple that fell in love at an early age. They entered marriage wide eyed and bushy tail, but they have stuck with it and with each other and have a TESTimony to share!
SDMS: What are your names (First names or Initials only) and how long have you been married?
Cordell and Cherith We have been married for 13 years and counting….
SDMS: What were your goals for your marriage when you were engaged?
We married at a young age. I was 21 and he was 22. We got married without setting any goals other than getting married. Good thing that God watches out for fools. Especially fools in love!
SDMS: How have your goals changed since marriage? Or have they changed?
Thankfully, we eventually set goals. We work hard every day to reach our goal of making our marriage last a lifetime.
SDMS: What is the one piece of advice you received that you still hold near and dear for your marriage?
Marriage is not a one size fits all deal. What works in one marriage may not necessarily work for all.
SDMS: How do you maintain work/life balance?
Both of us are very busy with work, the kids, church, and life in general. We have to steal moments when we can because we are both pulled in so many different directions. We do make an extra effort, however, to have dinner together each night and we talk multiple times throughout the day.
SDMS: How important is date night in your marriage?
Date night is very important to us. I love and cherish the times when we can have time for us to just focus on each other.
SDMS: When time is not available how do you and your spouse date?
We send each other text messages throughout the day.
SDMS: What is your favorite memory as a couple?
Both of us agree that our favorite memory was our 5th wedding anniversary. We spent a week in St. Lucia at the Sandals resort. It was absolutely beautiful in St. Lucia! We enjoyed being at a couples-only resort and we secretly loved the international roaming – for that meant that we had no contact with no one but each other for seven whole days! It was splendid!
SDMS: We know that you’re not supposed to want to be like another couple, but if you could be like any couple, who would you pick?
Heathcliff and Claire Huxtable. We still look at old reruns of The Cosby Show and talk about how much fun Cliff and Claire had with each other and with their family. Having fun is essential to a great marriage. We have a lot of fun together and I really think that has been one of the reason’s we’ve been together for as long as we have.
SDMS: What is something that most people don’t know about you two as a couple?
Cordell and I had our first date when I was 15 and he was 16. We have pretty much been inseparable since then. (We’re now 34 and 35.)
Thank you Cordell and Cherith!

You really do not hear any stories like this anymore. I only know 1 couple still together that were dating in High School and are still married.

My husband and I were the same. We were married at 20 and had no goals for ourselves but to get through college. It wasn’t until our 3rd year of marriage that it hit us how niave we had been, year 3 was rough. But we made a commitment to each other and came our stronger than ever.

I needed this article a few years ago! After 21 years and a 10 1/2 year old kid, marriage is tough! But we were raised to not get divorced, I do appreciate that lesson from our parents!

I love the one-size fits all advice. It’s easy for people to dole out advice and be upset when you don’t take it, but every relationship is unique..that’s just fact. 🙂 I think your love story is awesome!

What a sweet couple 🙂 Their relationship seems very down to earth and strong. I think they were quite responsible people since they took their first step together.

So glad to see a happy couple. And especially since they married young and so many people who marry young fail at their marriage. It’s good to see that it is possible.

I’m going into my second marriage and love reading about couples who’ve been married for a long time. Definitely is an inspiration.
