Oh, my who doesn’t remember Olivia Newton-John & John Travolta playing Sandy & Danny, respectively. The singing, the dancing, but over all the love connection.
I sure remember watching that movie and it was so fun to watch due to John being a good look for the eyes and Sandy singing & dancing all over the screen.
Well, we had an opportunity to see a 2013 version of Grease last night. We attended the preview day of Hattiloo Theater, in Memphis, TN, version of Grease. The play had the same concept as the original movie but with an updated spill. The some of the songs & scenes were the same.
Grease tells the story of two teenagers, Sandy Olson and Danny Zuko, who met & feel in love over the summer break. Not knowing that they would attend the same school, Rydell High, Sandy and Danny are faced with peer pressure of keeping their good girl & bad boy reputations.
While attempting to keep to the original theme, the writers were successful in helping to bridge the gap between 1958 and 2013. The characters were in period clothing but the gestures & the mannerisms could be witnessed be teenagers today.
Grease, the play, is written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. The play is directed by Ekundayo Bandele. The writing and directing team did an awesome job of keeping the play moving thru the scenes cohesively. The selection of actors & actress were spot on. There was only a few times where I thought a scene could have been left out; however, all in all the play was AWESOME.
This is the perfect setting for a date night. Hattiloo theater is small & cozy. The location of the theater is centrally located off of Union. The selection of dates & times will fit into many busy schedules.
Average ticket price is $25. You and your spouse can have dinner & a play for less than $100. Or attend the Saturday or Sunday matinee & enjoy brunch then attend the play. Either way this is the prefect date activity for couples.
