This past week, the media has been very happy to report about the number of Hollywood celebrities that are filing for divorces. Just as fast as the celebrities are getting married they are getting divorces. But is that really whats happening. What is it about marriage that scares celebrities?
This year, we have witnessed Brad Pitt and Angelina, Adam Levine, Jodie Foster, Gabrielle Union, Kaley Cuoco, Jessica Simpson, Kanye West and even the self proclaimed bachelor, George Clooney get married. We have also witnessed Amber Rose, Pat and Gina Neely, American Idol judge, Randy Jackson, Kris and Bruce Jenner, and Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have all filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences.
Dana Michel-the founder of MarriageMaterial.co, a new relationship site that caters to busy marriage-minded singles, talk about a potential trending feature in Hollywood marriages: marriage being an accessory. Michel, states “There is no doubt about it, marriage is definitely back in. People are tired of casual hookups and crave someone significant in their lives.”
When the media shines the spotlight on marriages that dissolve and not highlight marriages that are working, they are sending a message to people that marriage isn’t anything that you can take seriously. It is so important that we continue to highlight marriages and spotlight those that are fighting the good fight and sticking it out together. Marriage is not for the weak at heart nor those that consider marriage to be an accessory that can be changed out when the love for the accessory is gone.
Michel highlighted a few celebrity marriages that she think has longevity power:
Brad and Angelina
George Clooney said he would never get married. Then he met Amal and everything changed! She is marriage material. They have a good chance of working out because they are both committed to helping the impoverished live better lives. She is a human rights lawyer and he has used his celebrity status to shed light on the less fortunate. The great thing here is that each was committed individually to human rights so it’s not one person adopting a point of view or passion because they want to impress a mate. It is authentically their calling.
There are other A-listers that are holding their marriages near and dear to their hearts:
Bill and Camille Cosby, Denzel and Paulette Washington, Bill and Belinda Gates, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson just to name a few.
But what we have to remember, just as our marriages experience hardships, can you imagine the hardships celebrities face? So instead of saying “I knew they wouldn’t last” say “I pray for them and their kids.”
Regardless if they stay married 43 days or 43 years, their lives will not be the same once they have entered the into a marriage covenant. I hope celebrities, or anyone, entering into marriage know that this is not a fashion statement that they can change with the seasons.
What are your thoughts about the influx of divorces we are witnessing in Hollywood?
