In my wildest dream, I couldn’t be happier today. As a young woman, I had dreamed not only about a fairytale wedding but I dreamed about how PERFECT my marriage would be.
Today, is my 18th wedding anniversary.18 years!!!!!!!!
So when I did get married, the marriage began just like I thought.
We started out with stars in our eyes thinking nothing could go wrong. We love each other!
Oh but the reality of life and marriage quickly showed its [ugly] head!
Dream Marriage vs Marriage Reality
Dream: Big house with a nice big manicured yard.
Reality: We’ve lived in big houses, but we’ve also been homeless.
Dream: Hubby working a nice corporate job. Me being a big-time executive. Our steady income keeps us in a luxury lifestyle.
Reality: We’ve experienced making 6figures to not having enough food to feed us so we could only feed the kids.
Dream: several luxury cars, a mom carpool car + a vintage GTO in the garage
Reality: We’ve experienced driving a hooptie to luxury cars to cars that Fred Flintstone drove (holes in the floor).
Dream: Our families would embrace us & we all would love, laugh and live harmoniously as one.
Reality: We’ve experienced family trying to divide us.
Ohhhhh but God!
God allowed us to experience all of that because we needed to. Those experiences only strengthen our faith, our love, and connection!
Don’t get this post wrong. We still experience things but we view them differently than we did in 1998. We OGs in this marriage game. 18 years y’all.
18 freaking years! I’m crying because I never thought we would make 8 years let alone 18 years!
I know it’s only because of God & his support system he put around us that we are able to celebrate another year of marriage.
[Tweet “I also learned dreams are good but you have to embrace and understand the reality of marriage.”]
Marriage can’t be controlled like a TV sitcom.
18 years of marriage, I haven’t lived the marriage of my dreams and I’m ok with that. I know [now] what I am living is better than anything I could have dreamed.
God is really proving Ephesians 3:20 to be true.
20 Now to the one who can, according to his power that is operating in us, do more than superabundantly beyond all the things we ask or conceive.
Listen, don’t stop dreaming because what you Dream sets the foundation for God to work bigger things in your life and marriage.
So enjoy the experiences on this marriage journey. I know I am and I’m looking forward to 18 X 7 more years of celebrating anniversaries.
