The Christmas holiday season is that time of year that people believe that gifts, food, and laughter will bring about exhilarating joy. But what really is the meaning of Christmas? The answer to this question will vary depending on the experiences of the person you ask. Growing up, we were told that Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, but is it?
It’s the most wonderful time of the year
There’ll be much mistltoeing
And hearts will be glowing
When loved ones are near
It’s the most wonderful time of the year
~ It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year lyrics by Andy Williams
Growing up, I remember the Christmas tree in the living room with gifts with my name on it under it. I remember the fruit and nut bowl beautifully placed on the table. I remember my mom always eating orange slices (the candy). I remember all the cooking: the pies, the cakes, the chicken and dressing….food was everywhere because Christmas meant family time. Christmas really was a joyous occasion. I’m not sure if it was because as kids we weren’t responsible for any of the tasks to make everyone feel happy and excited about Christmas.
As adults, we are contending with various forces that can rob us of the joy this holiday season is billed as bringing to those that welcome it.
There are so many on my timeline and in my life that are grabbling with the thought of not having money, shelter or food not just on Christmas Day but many days. There are some dealing with the great loss of loved ones this year and years past. So, their meaning of Christmas will differ from someone that has all the necessities of life.
Yet, Christmas really can be a season of joy. We really can say the true meaning of Christmas is for us to reflect on what we have instead of what we lack.
No matter the struggles, the disagreements, the good or the bad that had happened with you or within your family, on Christmas Day, the family comes together to strengthen the bond, to love on one another, be an example of God’s unwavering love and protection over our lives and we also get to enjoy what our ancestors fought so hard for: to stay connected as one family unit.
Christmas is a reminder that family and friends are important extensions to who you are!
Tips to defining the true meaning of Christmas [for you]
As you are finalizing the preparations for how you will spend Christmas, let me remind you to PAUSE, IMAGINE, and APPRECIATE!
PAUSE
Pause all the negative self talk. Give yourself permission to see the good in YOU, in the support and help from others, and allow yourself to smile more than you frown. It’s important that you change your mindset/thought process. What we focus on is what consumes us. When those negative thoughts, worry, and doubt creeps up and try to consume your spirit, tell yourself: “Not today. Today, I am worthy to smile and have a great day!”
Make this Christmas be about good memories not memories of sadness or fear.
IMAGINE
This is where I will ask you to reach back and think like a child. As children, we didn’t restrict our imagination. We would sit and imagine the good things about people, places, things and OURSELVES. Take time to imagine you enjoying this time of year how you would like to enjoy. Manifest your life!
Ask God for what you need and allow God to give you what you need. What you waiting for? If you want to mend a bad relationship or even have money to feed your family a special meal for Christmas, ask God for it. Stop going at this alone.
God said, “Ask and you shall receive. You must believe.” You ask is only limited to your imagination.
Appreciate
Appreciate LIFE! Things really could be worse but you still have BREATH! You lose appreciation or gratitude when you are focused on what others have or what you don’t have. Keep your eyes on YOU and what you do have. So thanks for the small things and bigger things will be granted to you.
For me, this Christmas will be different for me.
I’m learning how to not be sad during the holidays.
I’m learning that material things are good but creating memories are better.
I’m learning that my actions throughout the year will effect how others spend their Christmas with me
The meaning of Christmas will be different for everyone. Yes, Jesus is the REASON for the season and always will be.
You have to know what Christmas means to you and allow that to guide your heart and actions. Give yourself grace. The meaning of Christmas changes as you change. That means you have to define and create YOUR Christmas joy and memories!
From my family to yours, I wish you nothing but joy and happiness this holiday season.
