Everyday I get up with a list of things to do and I thank God for awakening me. You know I worry about my blog, what to cook for dinner, and even worry about why my hair isn’t growing but that seems trivial when there are so many fighting for their life. My blogging friend, Amanda Henson (@highimpactmom and blogger at It’s Me, Amanda), recently found out she has Stage 3 Breast Cancer.
When I heard the news, I was dumbfounded, shocked, and scared for my friend and her family. Amanda is a 32 year old mother of 2 and has the best personality in the world. To hear that someone so young is about to battle for her life makes you stop and appreciate what you have. Breast Cancer does not discriminate, hell no form of cancer discriminates.
Per the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women. About 1 in 8 (12%) women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. This is an alarming statistic for me because I’m counting my friends and one of us will develop breast cancer. How disheartening, but real is this statistic.
The thing is, there is no guarantee way for you to keep yourself from getting breast cancer. There are some risk factors that you cannot change, such as: age, gender, and family history. But what you can do to stay on top of anything going on with you and your breast is to GET TESTED: GET A MAMMOGRAM. This test is so important in early detection and gives you a chance to take preventive measures.
But then there are those times that you do everything right and breast cancer still invades your body, your life, your family. This is exactly what has happened to my friend Amanda. So so many of her friends, including me, are taking it upon ourselves to enlist in #AmandasArmy. This Army of Bloggers is taking to the blogosphere to bring awareness about early detection, getting a mammogram and taking care of yourself to educate other women and men about breast cancer.
We are also raising funds for Amanda. These funds will go to Amanda to help offset the expenses she will face battling breast cancer and to help her family. Please take a moment to donate any amount to her cause.
When you learn of someone so young having cancer it’s a wake up call for so many of us to take preventative measures to care for ourselves. Do that self exam, get that mammogram, go to the doctor.
What encouragement do you have for Amanda or anyone going thru cancer treatment? What advice do you have for their family?
Please think about donating to Amanda’s YouCaring fund. Thanks!
