Couples’ photography is a must for any relationship. We love seeing ourselves immortalized on [photo] film. A simple snap of the shutter release button can capture the love and innocence of a couple.
A picture is worth a thousand words.
I’ve spoken with hundreds of thousands of couples and many only have taken pictures for formal occasions, such as, for their engagement and/or at their wedding. You are missing out on capturing moments of you and your spouse when you do not take time to invest in taking photos as a couple.

Why taking photos as a couple is important
I seriously wrote two paragraphs answering this question and erased them all. Because simple put:
Couples’ photography preserves new and old memories of the couple’s journey. Take it from me, when your spouse dies, you are grateful that you guys captured your love and relationship in pictures.
Just in case, you needed more convincing of the importance of taking photos with your spouse, here are 5 more reasons:
- Keepsakes
- Capture special moments
- Fun Date Activity
- It will tell your love story
- Being able to see the physical changes & growth as a couple
Ways to take Couples Photography
Capturing you and your spouse in pictures isn’t a hard or expensive task. Let’s be honest, the most difficult task will be coordinating your schedules and coordinating your outfits.
There are three options for taking amazing couples photos:
- Hire a professional photographer
- Take the photos using your DSLR camera or smartphone camera
- Enlist the help of a stranger
We will take a look at the benefits of these three options.
Hire a professional photographer
The hubby and I have enlisted the expertise of professional photographers several times. We loved using a professional when we wanted to take the guesswork out of getting amazing pictures with every snap. Y’all know what I’m talking about.
The benefits of using a professional photographer are:
- You aren’t responsible for the quality of the pictures
- The professional will help decide on poses
- The ability to capture you and your spouse
- You guys are free to just let loose and let the professional worry about the technical stuff associated with photoshoots
Here are a few pictures that were taken by a professional photographer. We took these for a specific reason to use for a cooking event we hosted for couples.
How cute and fun are these photos?
Schedule a professional photo shoot soon. If you are in Memphis, TN, we highly recommend Angie & Ike photography.
Use your smartphone camera to take photos
We live in a digital world. The majority of people have a smartphone with a pretty decent camera. That means it is really easy to take amazing photos of you and your spouse.
Equipment you will need:
- Smartphone
- Tripod
- Stutter timer (optional)
I’m good at impromptu photoshoots. I have hundreds of pictures of Stephon and I just because I would always capture us doing something and sometimes nothing.
The best pictures are those you do not plan.
Taking quality pictures with your camera phone is really easy nowadays because our phone cameras are pretty much point and shoot.
You guys can take pictures at home, in the park, or anywhere. You aren’t limited to where. Just remember to have great lighting, have fun, and don’t look at any pictures until you’re done with the photoshoot.
Here are a couple of pictures of the husband and I use my iPhone and or his Samsung galaxy phone.
Basically you are only limited by your willingness to take the photos and your imagination.
Enlist the help of a stranger to take your photo
The third option is to enlist the help of a stranger. Now, this option isn’t one that you would use often but you would use it during those times that you are out and about.
Normally, we only asked a stranger to snap our pictures when a selfie wouldn’t capture the true essence of the environment.
You would ask the person beside you to just snap a picture of you and your spouse. Easy peezy! You have captured a memory at that moment just by enlisting the help of a stranger.
5 Things to keep in mind when taking pictures with your spouse
If you are anything like me, I like to control every aspect of EVERYTHING! On picture day, let that trait sleep/hide/don’t show up during your photoshoot.
It’s important that you guys have fun during the photoshoot.
3. Laugh A HELL OF A LOT!
4. Touch on each other throughout the whole shoot.
- Just enjoy the moment. Everything will be amazing because you guys are amazing.
The most important thing to remember is to be yourselves. Take photos that speak to the essence of who you guys are as a couple. Just have FUN!
