Acrimony: bitterness or ill-feeling. The new Tyler Perry movie, Acrimony, touches on a topic/situations that aren’t’ talked about at all in the marriage circles. Acrimony shows what happens when there is a breakdown in a marriage or relationship.
My husband and I saw the movie on Easter Sunday. I had a preconceived idea about the movie storyline but I was so wrong. Acrimony brings to light what happens when couples are not united in their actions within the marriage.
Take a listen to what my husband and I had to say about the movie.
Three very important issues were addressed in the movie Acrimony.
1 Effective Communication. The couple in Acrimony did not have the conversation on how long the husband will chase his dream nor did they talk about the expectations the wife had for him while he chased his dreams. As a couple, you must articulate what you need from your spouse in the form of emotional, financial, and physical support. You cannot assume that what you are doing or giving is what your spouse needs from you.
2 Balance Purpose and Marriage. God instills in all of us a purpose. When you get married you have to find a way to balance your purpose and your marriage; neither should be neglected. The husband in the movie main focus was his dream/purpose. He forsake his wife and marriage to give all of his energy into getting his invention noticed. His wife shoulder all the marriage responsibilities by herself. This caused a serious breakdown and disconnect between the couple.
3 Keep outsiders out your marriage. Marriage is hard enough trying to balance the opinions of your husband with your opinions. When you invite or entertain outsiders opinions to weigh higher in your marriage than your spouse words or opinions, you are inviting problems. It’s imperative to use discernment when taking advice from others when it comes to your marriage.
The movie, Acrimony, on the surface seems like a 2018 version of Waiting to Exhale but in reality it’s a deeper movie than a woman scorned. This movie dapples into the complexity of relationships, effective communication and mental illness. Each of these topics are important and deserve to be discussed. Kudos to Tyler Perry for taking the chance on bringing these issues to the big screen.
