When people get married one of the things that is often said is “They married their BFF/friend.” When we are a friend, we care deeply for our friend. We are always building on the friendship foundation.
Do you still consider your spouse your BFF? Do you like being around your spouse? Are you actually being a friend to your spouse or are you in an obligated state/relationship only with your spouse?
14 Day Marriage Challenge: Friendship
Why be friends?
Think about one of your friends. What do you guys like to do together? When you are with your friend, how do you feel?
Most of you probably said you and your friends talk, laugh, eat, and just enjoy each other company. Ok, so what is wrong with having that type of relationship with your spouse?
As friends, you take on the responsibility of caring for your spouse, encouraging them and enjoying the time you spend together. Been friends will only help in building a strong marital foundation.
This friendship will grow as strong as the two people we are investing in the friendship, i.e. marriage. Remember, your spouse is the person your pledge to spend your life with, so why not be friends with someone that will be around for a long time.
Disclaimer: don’t lose yourself identity in marriage or making your spouse your friend. You should still have “your friends” but don’t negate the best friend, support, cheerleader ever which is your spouse.
How to maintain or achieve friendship with your spouse
- Support your spouse. Be your spouse biggest cheerleader
- Laugh often together
- Give your spouse the much needed kudos
- Schedule alone time for just you and your spouse
- Thank your spouse out the blue for all they do
- Don’t compete with your spouse. Embrace your spouse strengths and weaknesses and allow your strengths and weaknesses to compliment, work with, and enhance your spouse.
Life causes us to think we are too busy to appreciate the ones closes to us, but we are not THAT busy. Take time out time to nourish your friendship with your spouse.
